The 2007 Media Share Shift in the U.S.

March 15, 2008 – 14:38 by Mikko Hämäläinen

Silicon Alley Insider has made a FY2007 analysis of changes in media spend in the United States: Google Sucks Life Out of Old Media. The results are not that surprising, but the speed of change is. Google is on its way to become the largest media company in the United States. Given that all this happened only in span of 10 years, there are many books to be written on the subject.

From European perspective, things for so called old media do not look that dim, at least yet. Europe is still a fragmented market and in many cases dominated by strong local players. However, Google’s current marketshare in the U.S. will require speeding up European market share acquisition in order to keep up the pace of growth.

Time to get worried? I really think so, as Google now has the whole infrastructure ready and a lot of cash in bank for aggressive market penetration.
