Yahoo! opens up search and goes semantic
March 14, 2008 – 17:30 by Mikko HämäläinenTC reported Yahoo!’s latest developments with search and in my opinion the new functionality looks fantastic. First of all, Yahoo! is going to open up their search platform utilizing Amazon’s OpenSearch API for structured content queries. Secondly, Yahoo! will implement multiple microformats that the users can use to markup content and thus allows for building semantic relations which enhances the search result quality. Thirdly, Yahoo! will give access for third parties to leverage the semantic data.
Being search and information junkie, this thing looks astonishing. The general users will benefit from superior search result quality, the content providers will get more valuable visitors and of course advertising will be better targeted enhancing lead generation.
Given Yahoo!’s troubles in the past, this really proves that Yahoo! still is innovating and to some degree has a lead over Google in search technology. I for one hope that all the recent developments won’t be sacrificed if Microsoft manages to pull the acquisition through.
